There is a plausible theory going around that this sociological class label (of professionals in academia, think tanks, journalism, etc. that set the foundations of society's discourse) is not so aptly named (anymore), and rather has been taken over by a "midwit industrial complex", e.g.
the idea is that actually with the current overproduction of degree holders and the symbolic economy, many of them are not particularly high IQ but just decided to specialize in some specific highly structured academic discipline's language game and then doggedly try to hit every nail they can with their hammer in their sense of entitlement.
